Fishfinders Assist with Finding the Fish
Fishfinders also called fishing sonars or echo sounders, display a representation of what is under the water. They can give you an idea of just what is on the bottom. From vegetation, structures, ledges, rocks, logs, and fish you will now have an idea of just what is down there.
These systems come in single and double frequency models. The single frequency is more then adequate for most lakes and shallow coastal fishing areas. However if you are planning on fishing the deeper waters of some lakes or in the ocean you should think about a dual frequency model
Fishfinders use a transducer, mounted on the transom, inside the hull, or on a trolling motor. The transducer sends and receives underwater high-frequency sound waves. A cable connects the transducer to the fishfinder display screen. The unit's specialized software converts the sound waves and displays them using shades of gray, symbols, or bright colors. Using the symbols that are displayed on the screen you are able to visualize structures, the bottom, different temperature layers, schools of fish, and even individual fish.
Fishfinders present their results on liquid crystal display also called (LCD) screen. LCD displays are measured in pixels. A pixel is a little square blocks on the screen the combination of these blocks is what makes up the image. The more pixels a display has the better the resolution which provides for a clearer picture.
There are three main types of fishfinder displays:
Passive Matrix monochrome and color LCDs
Active Matrix TFT (thin film transistor) color LCDs
Color CRTs
Active Matrix TFT (thin film transistor) color LCDs
Color CRTs
Each type has advantages and disadvantages; it is a good idea to research these screen types before making a selection.
